Chris Kyle Benefit Knife

We were humbled and honored when the American Valor Foundation asked us to create a knife for the Chris Kyle Memorial Benefit in Durant, Oklahoma May 6th, 2023. We talked to Chris’s father Wayne and discovered he had one of Chris’s farrier rasps, some shoes off his horse and a trident. Blaine and I got started working on this project together. I annealed the rasp, cut and shaped the blade, and tapered the tang. Blaine hollow ground it and added a taper to the blade. It was Blaine’s idea to add the black micarta handle, combining the cowboy look of the rasp with military appearance of the micarta. Jana and I got together and came up with a layout for the stand. I used a piece of black walnut that she and I picked up years ago. I cleaned up the shoes some and left five of the original worn nails in place. After welding them together they were coated with “Forge Coat” to protect them from corrosion and secured to the base with shoeing nails from my own supply. I also used shoeing nails as the mounting platform for the knife to rest on. Jana completed a leather sheath, dyed it black, and of course added a “U.S.” concho to it. A friend and photographer, Michael Bartos, donated his time to photograph this build, and a great job he did. We want to give God all of the glory for connecting us and for how this one-of-a-kind build turned out.
